Recording artist Trey Songz found himself sandwiched between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj — and for reasons, he had not envisioned.
Remy Ma stunned the internet and Songz when she released a Minaj diss track titled “ShETHER” on Feb. 25, and name-dropped the 32-year-old heartthrob.
“Mention guns, you [expletive] Galore, James Bond/Only time you touch a trigga is when you [expletive] Trey Songz,” rapped Remy Ma, whose real name is Reminisce Mackie.
Minaj responded to Songz’s tweets, reprimanding him for not denying Remy’s salacious claims.
He then responded to Minaj, stating he did refute Remy’s claims in a video uploaded to Instagram. In the video, Songz denied ever having sexual intercourse with Minaj and lauded both women for their talents.
Minaj — real name Onika Maraj — lent her rap skills to Songz’s singles, “Bottoms Up” and “Touchin, Lovin” released in 2010 and 2014, respectively. They also collaborated with Fabolous on his 2015 single, “Doin It Well.”
In a June 2014 interview with Billboard, Songz spoke highly of the Trinidadian-born rapper.
“I’m so proud of her, just to see her evolve into what she is now,” said Songz. “She’s so smart and intelligent to have masterminded the whole Nicki Minaj rise to where she is… to have become a pop star.”
Some fans have accused Minaj of abandoning her street cred on her quest to pop stardom and they hope Remy Ma’s callout will lead to Minaj reverting to her old self.
“What we’ve consistently seen as of late is a lack in (sic) lyrical exercise. And we’ve all been asking for better raps. SO…,” tweeted LOWKEYUHTN. “This is a PERFECT opportunity for Nicki to rise to the occasion and clearly remind us that she can still get busy at a moments (sic) notice.”
Minaj has yet to retaliate against Remy. In the meantime, check out some memes surrounding the rap battle.
