A Brooklyn man was arrested for reportedly stalking the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama.
According to the New York Daily News, Jair Nilton Cardoso entered the Manhattan building where Malia Obama is undertaking an internship and made a scene before he was told to leave by her Secret Service detail on April 10.
Cardoso, 30, allegedly “put a sign in the window and loudly begged her to marry him,” the report said.
Two days later, the man was spotted following Obama as she left a building in the West Village, another location where she interns, the source said. Cardoso was photographed with a walking stick, but he isn’t blind.
He was stopped by Secret Service agents who recognized him to be the man who had consistently tried to enter the White House in the past. They ordered him to stay away from the 18-year-old.
The following day, authorities paid a visit to Cardoso at his Brooklyn residence. He was interviewed, where it was concluded that he had mental health issues. Cardoso was transported to a Brooklyn hospital for an evaluation.
On Tuesday (April 18), Secret Service agents submitted Cardoso’s information to officers at First Precinct stationhouse in Lower Manhattan. Officers are still deciding whether or not to press stalking or harassing charges against him.
Malia Obama, graduated from high school last June, is spending her gap year as an intern with film producer Harvey Weinstein. In 2014, she interned with HBO’s Girls, where the show’s creator Lena Dunham lauded the teenager for her professionalism.
“She was interested, and she was interning at HBO, and they thought, ‘What if she comes a couple days a week to the set of Girls,” Dunham said during an interview with Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show.
She quipped, “Obviously, we weren’t making her go get our coffee. But she wanted to do all the jobs, that was the cool thing. She was totally enthusiastic.”
Obama will attend Harvard University in the fall.
