When it comes to working out, Gabrielle Union bites the bullet.
The Being Mary Jane actress covers Health magazine and said her fear of being fat-shamed, as well as health ailments, serve as motivators to stay fit.
“Knowing that there are people who cannot wait to circle your fat and draw an arrow to it keeps me in the gym,“ she told the publication. “So between fearing health issues and fearing (tabloid articles like) ‘Stars, they’re just like us! Look at their cellulite!’ – that keeps me in the gym.
“Then, when I get in there, I get competitive and won’t leave. I basically have the Olympics happening in my mind with strangers. They don’t realize we’re competing, but I usually take gold. Mainly because they’ve left.”
Union, who is a married to a real Olympian in NBA star Dwyane Wade, said her morning routine wouldn’t include the gym if it were up to her.
“I do not (like to workout),” the 44-year-old said. “I’m not one of those people, like, ‘I can’t start my day without it.’ Nope. I can actually start my day beautifully, sleeping in, eating some pancakes.”
When Union isn’t scarfing down breakfast delicacies, she is scrolling through her social media feed. The veteran actress has over eight million followers on Instagram, but that isn’t to say all followers are fans.
Among the supporters are naysayers and Union love to delve deep into those who sit anonymously behind a computer screen and criticize her and other celebrities.
“If it kinda strikes a nerve, I need to know who said it,” she admitted. “I deep dive into their social media. No one who’s ever said anything super negative to me has an amazing life. Once I realized that it’s different than, like, J.Lo saying, ‘Her squat form wasn’t right.’ Because she would know. But you, in your mom’s basement, really?”
