Dannon Yogurt has decided to part ways with Cam Newton, just one day after the Carolina Panthers quarterback was chided for making a sexist remark to a female journalist.
“We are shocked and disheartened at the behavior and comments of Cam Newton towards Jourdan Rodrigue, which we perceive as sexist and disparaging to all women,” Michael Neuwirth, senior director of external communications for Dannon, said in a statement Thursday.
“It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It’s simply not OK to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerns with Cam and will no longer work with him.”
At a news conference Wednesday, Newton dismissed Jourdan Rodrigue, a Charlotte Observer writer covering the team saying: “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.” His response spurred a national outcry.
Rodrigue said later on Twitter: “I don’t think it’s ‘funny’ to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.”
The Charlotte Observer reporter also said Newton did not apologize to her, despite claims from Carolina Panthers spokesperson Steven Drummond that he did.
After Newton’s comments went viral, the NFL distanced itself from its star athlete.
Brian McCarthy, a spokesperson for the NFL, said in a statement Wednesday that Newton’s comments “are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league.”
McCarthy added, “They do not reflect the thinking of the league.”
Gatorade, who Newton also endorses, called his statement “objectionable and disrespectful to all women.”

Newton partnered with Dannon in 2015 to endorse its Oikos Greek yogurt brand.
“Cam was the top of our list, and we were thrilled that he was available and interested,” Neuwirth said at the time.
Newton at the time stated Oikos was “right up my alley – not only because of its nutritional benefits but because it tastes good, too.”
Aside from Dannon, Newton has endorsement deals with Pepsi, Under Armour, and Beats by Dre.
