After three sons, Dwyane Wade is now the father of a baby girl.

Yet, when it came time to pick a name for his and Gabrielle Union Wade’s newest addition they chose a classic boy name. One week after welcoming their “miracle” baby, Wade posted a photo of himself showcasing their newborn’s name.

“#TBT Goes back to that one night in China when i decided to get my daughters name tattooed on me,” the 36-year-old NBA star captioned a shirtless pic that shows the baby’s first name on one shoulder and her middle name on the other. “Kaavia James Union Wade!”

The choice to add James as a middle name could be an ode to his best friend, LeBron James. The former Miami Heat teammates often travel together during the offseason.

Wade concluded his caption with the hashtag #paternityleave,” which isn’t in the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

“Our situation is different,” Wade told the Associated Press. “The world expects moms to take time off from work. They never expect dads to be the ones who take time away. Because of the route we took to this, it’s important that not only my wife but also me take this time. I was going to take the whole year. I was going to retire this summer. But I decided to just take a little time in between instead.”

Union has been candid about her struggle with infertility, writing about it in her book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, which was released in 2017.

“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” she wrote. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

She added: “For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’ A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”

Wade’s teammate Udonis Haslem is baby Kaavia’s godfather.

Media But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness.

No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful.
