Kevin Hart is out as host of the 2019 Academy Awards after refusing to apologize for resurfaced homophobic and transphobic tweets.

Motion Picture Academy officials gave Hart an ultimatum to either offer up a mea culpa or face ousting, and the funnyman chose the latter.

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists,” Hart wrote in a statement on Twitter.

Prior to Hart’s resignation, he defiantly refused to apologize for his wrongdoings. The comedian said he was far removed from the behavior he exhibited nearly a decade ago.

“My team calls me, ‘Oh my God, Kevin, everyone’s upset by tweets you did years ago,’” he said in one of several videos. “Guys, I’m nearly 40 years old. If you don’t believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to hold people in a position where they always have to justify the past, do you. I’m the wrong guy, man.”

While many on social media – including his celebrity peers – called for an apology, Hart continued to push back.

Contrary to Hart’s initial refusal to apologize, he ultimately did, writing: “I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”

The 39-year-old funnyman also hoped to one day emcee the Oscars in the near future.

A slew of anti-gay tweets by Hart was unearthed after he was revealed as the ceremony’s host.

One tweet from 2011 read: “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.”

Hart, who described the Oscars hosting gig as an “opportunity of a lifetime,” is currently in Australia on tour.

The Academy has not announced Hart’s replacement.

Media But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness.

No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful.
