It took a lot of convincing for Serena Williams to believe she was pregnant.
The tennis superstar recounted the moment she found out she was pregnant to Vanity Fair for its August issue.
Williams said she was feeling unlike herself about a week before the beginning of the Australian Open in January this year.
Her friend Jessica Steindorff suggested that she take a pregnancy test to which she agreed.
“I’ll take it just because (a) to prove you wrong and (b) because it’s fun, whatever. It’s like a joke. Why not?” Williams said.
Certain she wasn’t pregnant, Williams totally forgot about the test. When she finally checked the results, she said she “did a double take and my heart dropped. Like literally it dropped.”
“Oh my God, this can’t be — I’ve got to play a tournament. How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon (her third straight) this year,” Williams said were her first thoughts.
To prove the result wasn’t a false positive, Steindorff purchased five additional tests, which all came out to be positive.
After coming to the realization that she was indeed pregnant, Williams contacted her fiance, Alexis Ohanian. He immediately boarded a plane down under.
Upon Ohanian’s arrival, the 23-time grand champion handed him a paper bag containing the six positive pregnancy tests. He was equally stunned.
Although six months pregnant, the reality of having a baby still hasn’t sunk in.
“It just doesn’t seem real. I don’t know why. Am I having a baby?’ she said. “I don’t know what to do with a baby. I have nothing … I’ve done absolutely nothing for the baby room.”
As for Ohanian’s preparations, he’s planted “a tip jar he puts money into whenever he uses profanity so he won’t utter it around the baby.”
The couple dated for a year before their engagement in Italy last year. Although Ohanian had wanted the engagement to be a surprise, Williams had an inclination that he would pop the question.
“I knew it was coming. I was like, ‘Serena, you’re 35, you’re ready. This is what you want,'” she said.
When asked how he knew Williams was the one, Ohanian said: “I felt like a door had been opened to a person who made me want to be my best self.”
He added, “I find myself just wanting to be better by simply being around her because of the standard she holds.”
